The door clicked softly behind him. Michael Whitmore, impeccably suited and still carrying his briefcase, had come home earlier than expected.
He expected to find his house quiet, as if frozen in anticipation of his return. But what he saw when he crossed the kitchen threshold left him speechless.
Gloria, the nanny he had always considered beyond reproach, was standing over the sink.
In a translucent basin filled with water tinted an odd blue, Emily, his baby, was quietly clapping her hands.

Michael stepped forward with a sharp stride, his eyes fixed on the azure liquid. A sharp, herbal smell was already rising from the basin.
“A special bath?” he repeated, anger rumbling beneath every syllable. “You took it upon yourself to experiment on my daughter without asking me?”
Gloria hugged the baby to her, almost defensively.
“I would never hurt Emily. You must believe me. It’s a safe remedy, passed down through generations.”
But Michael, his heart pounding, saw only a dangerous act—another secret she had kept. His hands tightened on his briefcase. A dilemma tore at him: yank his daughter out of the basin immediately or find out how far Gloria was willing to go.
Michael froze, breath shallow. Before him, Gloria rocked Emily in the bluish water, letting the mysterious liquid drip drop by drop.
“Stop that at once!” he thundered, his voice trembling with fury.
Gloria jumped, instinctively drawing the baby closer. Tears welled in her eyes.
“Mr. Whitmore… please, don’t think I want to hurt her.”

“Then explain! Why this bath? Why the secrecy?”
Gloria’s voice broke.
“Since she was born, I’ve watched Emily struggle… sleepless nights, constant crying. You were away, absorbed in your work, and I… I couldn’t just stand by and watch her suffer. In my family, this remedy calms babies. I just wanted to help her… to ease her.”
Her hands trembled as she gently stroked the child’s head.
“I love her as if she were my own. She’s all I have. If you take her from me, I’ll have nothing left.”
Michael felt his anger waver, replaced by a heavier weight: guilt. Before him, two truths collided—the fear of losing Emily and the pain of a woman who, out of love, had crossed the line.
