On our wedding night, I hid under the bed to tease my new husband— but

As I clutched the phone to my ear, the initial shock of betrayal slowly gave way to a steely resolve. Each heartbeat seemed to echo with newfound clarity and purpose. I couldn’t help but think about the layers of deception that had been peeled back in mere moments, revealing the ugly truth beneath what I had believed to be a fairytale romance.

“Sweetheart, what’s going on?” My father’s voice, warm and steady, brought an immediate sense of comfort amidst the chaos swirling in my mind.

“Dad,” I began, my voice quivering slightly before I steadied it with a firm resolve. “We need to talk about Marcus, his mother, and their little plan to exploit me.”

There was a pause on the other end, and I could almost see my father’s expression shift from concern to a calculated seriousness. “Tell me everything,” he urged gently.

I recounted the entire conversation I had overheard, the bile rising in my throat as I described their malicious intent. My father listened intently, his silence punctuated only by the occasional intake of breath as he processed the gravity of the situation.

“Is there anything you need right now?” he asked after a moment of contemplation. “Do you want me to come get you?”

“No, Dad,” I replied, my voice firm. “I’m going to handle this. But I need you to prep the lawyers and get my affairs in order. We’re going to turn this around, but I need to stay close to them for now to gather more evidence.”

“Understood,” he said, the pride evident in his tone. “Don’t worry, we’ll make sure this doesn’t go the way they planned. You’re your mother’s daughter, after all.”

I smiled at the warmth of his words, the reference to my mother reminding me of her unyielding strength and wisdom. I knew, without a doubt, that I had inherited her tenacity.

After ending the call, I took a moment to compose myself, smoothing down the crumpled layers of my wedding dress. The image of the demure bride was gone, replaced by the determination of a woman ready to fight back against those who had wronged her.

With calculated steps, I made my way to the adjoining suite where our guests were still celebrating, oblivious to the storm that was brewing. Marcus was there, his charming façade firmly in place as he entertained friends and family.

Our eyes met, and he shot me a warm smile that once would have made my heart skip a beat. Now, it fueled the fire within me. I returned his smile with one of my own, though mine was laced with the knowledge of his betrayal.

A plan was forming in my mind, one that would ensure Marcus and Veronica’s scheme would crumble under the weight of their deceit. I would play the role they expected—for now—using their underestimation of me as my greatest weapon.

The wedding festivities continued around me, the music and laughter a stark contrast to the quiet resolve within. As I navigated the crowd, exchanging pleasantries and well-wishes, I knew that the night was far from over. The game was just beginning.
