A Black boy with a four-star general for a father? Impossible. Unbelievable. Easier to call it untrue.

“My mom works hard because she wants to,” Jame said. “My dad sends money, but she’s independent. She likes her job.” His voice rose. “And what does our address have to do with anything? What does free lunch have to do with my dad’s rank?”

The door to the main office opened. Voices drifted in.

One of them was his mother’s.

“By assuming he was lying based on what?” Hughes asked. “His skin color? His address? His mother’s job?”

Morrison opened another folder.

“We asked Fort Bragg’s legal office to review every complaint filed by military families at this school in the past eighteen months,” he said. “Would you like to know what they found?”

He didn’t wait for an answer.

“Six families,” he read. “Four Black, two Latino. One parent is a major. One is a command sergeant major. One is a lieutenant colonel. All of them filed complaints about you.
