My husband missed our daughter’s funeral to go on vacation with his mistress, but he had no idea what I was going to do next.
Our daughter passed away at the age of five. On the day of her funeral, I stood in front of her grave, unable to believe she was no longer with us. I held her favorite stuffed animal in my arms, clutching it to my chest.
The ceremony took place under a gray sky, and everyone present had the same thought: “She didn’t deserve this end.” Friends, family members, and even Emily’s teachers had come to say their last goodbye. And it was only my husband who was absent.
At first, he had gone on a business trip for a few days, but then he called to tell me that he had to extend his stay for another week because it was a very important professional opportunity. He didn’t even attend our daughter’s funeral.
On the morning of the funeral, I tried once more to reach him, sending him all the details of the ceremony. But he responded with a cold message: “I can’t come. Important meeting. I’ll call you later.” No words of comfort, no apology. Just an impersonal cancellation.
Then, I found out that in reality, he wasn’t on a business trip at all. He was enjoying a vacation with his mistress. Can you imagine that?
Not even the loss of our daughter seemed to affect him. He was casually on vacation, as if everything was fine, but he had no idea what I was going to do next.

He came back a week later.
He walked in without a care in the world, holding a bouquet of white lilies, the ones Emily loved, and a brand-new teddy bear, still with its tag.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “Things got complicated… The meetings took longer than expected. I couldn’t leave.”
I stared at him in silence.
I didn’t scream, nor did I shed a single tear. I simply replied, “I understand.”
He seemed relieved, thinking that I had forgiven him.
But I pulled a file out of the drawer and placed it on the table.
Inside, there were screenshots of his messages, hotel bookings, and a video of him kissing his mistress at the hotel, the same day as Emily’s funeral.
The divorce papers were already signed.
He had lost everything. Just like I did that day, holding our daughter’s urn in my arms.
