In court, my ex said, “my son wants to live with me.” the judge asked

Zaden hesitated, the weight of the moment hanging heavily on his small shoulders. He looked at me, his eyes wide, searching. I gave him a small nod, a silent message that it was okay to speak his truth. The judge leaned forward slightly, waiting patiently, yet his presence felt enormous, filling the room with authority.

Zaden slowly got up from his seat. His small frame seemed dwarfed by the gravity of the situation, but there was a quiet determination in his eyes. He swallowed and took a deep breath, clutching his phone tightly. “Your Honor,” he began, his voice clear but slightly trembling. “May I play a recording from last night?”

The judge looked taken aback, glancing momentarily at Damian, whose smirk faltered just a fraction. “What kind of recording, Zaden?” the judge asked, his voice calm but curious.

Zaden glanced at me, then back at the judge. “It’s a recording of my dad and me talking last night,” he said. “I think it might help explain things.”

The judge paused, considering the request. He adjusted his glasses, assessing the situation. “Very well,” he nodded. “You may proceed.”

Zaden fumbled slightly with his phone, his fingers small and unsure, but eventually, he found the recording. He pressed play, and the sound of Damian’s voice filled the courtroom, slightly scratchy through the phone’s speaker but unmistakable.

“…and you know, if you tell the judge you want to live with me, I’ll get you that new video game you wanted. We’ll have so much fun living together, just us guys,” Damian’s voice coaxed, dripping with promises.

Damian’s lawyer stiffened, and a murmur rippled through the courtroom. Damian’s confident demeanor cracked, his face flushing with a mixture of anger and embarrassment. I felt a rush of relief mingled with sadness for Zaden, who should never have been put in such a position.

The judge listened intently, his expression unreadable, but the atmosphere in the room had shifted. He raised his hand, signaling for the recording to stop. Zaden complied, looking up at the judge with a mixture of fear and hope.

“Thank you, Zaden,” the judge said, his tone softening. “That was very brave of you.”

The judge turned his attention back to Damian. “Mr. Carter, it seems there’s more to this request than you initially presented. Zaden’s recording suggests coercion rather than a genuine desire to change living arrangements.”

Damian opened his mouth to protest, but the judge raised a hand to silence him. “We will take a short recess,” he announced, “to consider the implications of this new evidence.”

As everyone began to rise and shuffle out of the courtroom, I leaned down to Zaden, wrapping my arms around him tightly. “I’m so proud of you,” I whispered. He nodded against my shoulder, his small frame relaxing slightly.

The echoes of footsteps and whispered conversations filled the air as we stepped out of the courtroom, leaving behind the echoes of a truth that had been bravely revealed by a little boy finding his voice.
